An organic hair salon is one that uses colour and care products built on certified organic and naturally derived ingredients, with the harshest conventional chemicals either removed or kept to the lowest workable level. At Urban Hair & Co in Earlwood, that means ammonia-free NATULIQUE colour, a considered product range and a consultation process that starts with your scalp and hair health rather than a shade chart.
It also means being straight with you about what organic hairdressing can and can’t do, which is where most of the conversation online falls down. Our approach is designed to provide a gentler and more comfortable salon experience for our clients and for our team.
What is an organic hair salon?
There is no single legal definition, which is exactly why the term gets stretched. In practice, a genuinely organic-focused salon differs from a conventional one in four measurable ways: the colour system on the shelf, the aftercare range it stocks and recommends, the air you breathe while you’re in the chair and the training its stylists have done in working with gentler chemistry.
Here’s the honest part. No permanent hair colour on the market is one hundred per cent organic. Permanently changing the colour of the hair shaft requires a chemical reaction, and no plant extract does that on its own. Henna and other true plant dyes coat and stain the hair rather than lifting it and they bring their own limitations, unpredictable results over previously coloured hair, and very little flexibility if you change your mind.
What a serious organic salon does instead is minimise the load. Ammonia is replaced with gentler alkalising agents. Colour lines are chosen for their certified organic ingredient content and their lower levels of the ingredients most associated with sensitivity. Shampoos and treatments are free of added sulphates, parabens and silicones that strip colour and coat the hair. Any salon claiming more than that is overselling.
Why Urban Hair & Co is different
The colour system was chosen, not inherited
The salon didn’t inherit its colour line, it chose it. NATULIQUE is a Danish professional haircare brand made with certified organic and natural ingredients, with ammonia left out of the permanent colour system rather than simply reduced. Urban Hair & Co uses NATULIQUE professional ammonia-free hair colour, formulated with ingredients derived from natural and certified organic sources.
What matters more than the brand story is what it changes in the chair: colour that develops without the sharp smell, a shampoo and treatment range without added sulphates, parabens or silicones, and an ingredient list we are happy to hand you if you ask to read it.
We also retail the range we colour with, which is not the same decision as using it. Plenty of salons work with one brand and sell whatever carries the best margin. Stocking NATULIQUE means the aftercare we send you home with is matched to the colour we have just put on your hair, rather than sold to you separately from it.
What NATULIQUE says about its colour
NATULIQUE’s current documentation describes its professional colours as:
NATULIQUE also states that the preservatives it uses are approved for use under ECOCERT and COSMOS standards. That is a statement about those ingredients. It does not mean every finished NATULIQUE product is independently ECOCERT- or COSMOS-certified, and we would rather say that plainly.

Our team is trained in gentler chemistry
Ammonia-free colour does not behave like conventional colour. It develops differently, it lifts differently, and it needs a colourist who understands that rather than one working around it. Every stylist at Urban Hair & Co is NATULIQUE trained, which is the difference between an organic colour that performs and one that leaves you disappointed.
The consultation comes before the colour
Every new client starts with a conversation and a skin allergy test at least 48 hours before their first colour service. We look at scalp condition, previous chemical history, water quality damage, and what your hair is realistically going to do. Clients come to us with sensitive or reactive scalps, during and after pregnancy, or with fine and fragile hair that hasn’t coped well with conventional colour and the plan is built around that, not around a photo.
The salon itself feels different
The first thing most people notice is the absence of that sharp chemical smell. Ammonia-free colour is dramatically lower in odour, which changes what it’s like to sit in the chair for two hours and what it’s like for our team, who are in it all week.
Aftercare that doesn’t undo the work
There is no point in a gentle colour service if you go home and wash it with a sulphate-heavy supermarket shampoo. We stock the NATULIQUE aftercare range in the salon, matched to the service you have just had rather than picked off a shelf. We’ll tell you what your hair actually needs and, just as often, what you don’t need to buy.
Organic-based colour vs conventional colour: an honest comparison
The trade-off worth naming: if you’re going from dark brown to platinum in one appointment, conventional lightening will get you there faster. We’ll tell you that honestly and then talk through a staged plan that gets you to the same place without wrecking your hair on the way.
Who organic hair colour suits best
It suits people whose scalps react to conventional colour with itching, burning or flaking. It suits clients with fine, fragile or previously over-processed hair that can’t afford further damage. It suits people who are pregnant or breastfeeding and want to reduce their chemical exposure — though that’s always a conversation to have with your GP or midwife first, and many choose to wait until the second trimester. It suits anyone with curly or wavy hair, where moisture retention matters more than anywhere else. And it suits people who simply don’t want to sit in a cloud of fumes for two hours.
What to expect at your first visit
Your first appointment starts with a skin allergy test booked at least 48 hours ahead, non-negotiable, and worth the extra trip. On the day, we’ll go through your hair history, look at your scalp and the condition through mid-lengths and ends, and agree on a realistic plan. Colour is then formulated for your hair rather than pulled from a standard recipe. We finish with a treatment appropriate to your hair’s condition, a cut or style and a straightforward aftercare plan.

Foil colour work in progress at the salon.
If what you’re asking for isn’t achievable in one sitting, we’ll say so before we start and map out how many sessions it will realistically take.
Frequently asked questions
Is organic hair colour one hundred per cent natural?
No, and any salon that tells you otherwise isn’t being straight with you. Permanent colour requires a chemical reaction. What organic-based colour does is remove ammonia, raise the certified organic ingredient content, and reduce the ingredients most commonly linked to scalp sensitivity. NATULIQUE’s documentation states that its professional colours are up to 98.02% derived from organic or natural sources, depending on the particular product.
Which colour brand do you use?
NATULIQUE. Urban Hair & Co uses NATULIQUE professional ammonia-free hair colour, formulated with ingredients derived from natural and certified organic sources. We use it for every colour service, every stylist on the team is NATULIQUE trained, and we stock the aftercare range in the salon so you can keep the same chemistry going at home.
Does ammonia-free colour cover grey properly?
Yes. Modern ammonia-free systems give excellent grey coverage. Resistant grey sometimes needs a slightly longer development time or a pre-softening step, which your colourist will account for in the formula.
Is it safe to colour my hair while pregnant?
Speak to your GP or midwife — that advice has to come from them, not from us. Many clients choose to wait until the second trimester, and many prefer ammonia-free colour or foil work that keeps product off the scalp. We’re happy to work with whatever your health professional recommends.
Does organic colour fade faster?
Not inherently. Most fading comes from sulphate-based shampoos, very hot water, sun and heat styling. With matched aftercare, clients generally find their colour holds tone well between appointments.
Can you take me blonde?
Often, yes — but usually across more than one session, depending on your starting level and hair condition. We’d rather stage it properly than compromise the integrity of your hair to hit a result in one day.
Do I need a patch test every time?
A skin allergy test is required before your first colour service with us, and again if there’s been a long gap between visits or a change in your formula. It takes minutes and it matters.
Where are you located?
We’re at 116 Wardell Road, Earlwood NSW 2206, in Sydney’s Inner West, and we see clients from across Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Canterbury, Bexley North, Undercliffe and the surrounding suburbs.
What are your opening hours?
We’re open Wednesday 12:00 pm–9:00 pm, Thursday and Friday 9:00 am–5:00 pm, and Saturday 8:00 am–6:00 pm. Tuesday is by appointment. We’re closed on Mondays and Sundays.
Is there parking near the salon?

A treatment suited to your hair's condition finishes each visit.
